Upon acceptance

Once you receive your acceptance to UNB, you may be wondering what you should do next. Moving to a new country is exciting, but it can also be a bit challenging and overwhelming.

Steps for a successful start at UNB

Activating your UNB IT services gives you access to the MyUNB Intranet, your UNB email, course registration, entrance scholarship information, financial information, Microsoft 365 apps and more.

To activate your IT services account, use your student number and login ID that was included in your acceptance letter.

Once your account is activated, you need to set up multi-factor authentication (MFA), an extra layer of security required when logging in to UNB IT services.

To set up MFA, you need to download the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device (if you don’t have one, there are other options available). If you are unable to access your UNB account or have trouble setting up MFA, contact UNB’s IT Service Desk for assistance.

UNB will ask you to formally accept your offer and pay an admission deposit. The instructions are provided in your UNB application portal.

After you complete this step, you can then provide proof of payment of your admission deposit in your study permit application and show your intention of beginning your studies at UNB.

Most international students have to apply - and be approved - for a study permit prior to arrival in Canada. The immigration process can be challenging and lengthy and we recommend that you start this process as soon as you are accepted.

Scholarships are financial awards that are merit-based, meaning that your previous grades will be considered when UNB assesses your application.

The Fredericton and Saint John campuses have on-campus residences for students. Living on campus is convenient, a great way to meet friends, be in an English immersion environment and integrate into the Canadian culture. Residence students have a mandatory all you care to eat meal plan.

Once you have activated your UNB IT Services, you can submit a residence application and pay your $800 non-refundable deposit.

We recommend our first-year undergraduate students live on campus. In doing so, you can benefit from a gentle introduction to living away from home and from our residence support services.

Once you have received a positive decision on your study permit application, you can book your flights to Canada and to New Brunswick.

Prepare your arrival

To help you decide on an arrival date, be sure to check UNB's important dates to learn when classes will start.

If you have been accepted to live in residence, you will need to check with the residence staff on the move-in date. You may choose to arrive earlier than residence move-in day, but you will need to find and pay for temporary accommodations on your own.

Flights into New Brunswick are available via Montreal or Toronto International airports.

Undergraduate students

A task that is unfamiliar for most new students is the selection and registration of your courses at UNB. You may be used to your previous institutions registering you in courses, or providing you with lists of classes to take.

At UNB, depending on your program, you may have much more flexibility with your course selection. You are required to complete your course registration via myUNB Intranet.

There are two main questions to be addressed:

  • How do you register for UNB courses?
  • How will you know what UNB courses to take?

Some UNB departments will provide this information to you upon acceptance; for others, you will have to do this research on your own.

Step 1: Research

The audit forms and degree checklists will give you an idea of what courses you should be taking in the first year.

Saint John academic advisors may be available via virtual sessions in MS Teams for your questions.

Step 2: Register

Learn what courses are being offered throught the timetable. You will then plan and register for the courses that you researched from Step 1.

Step 3: Reach out

You can confirm with your academic advisor and have them doublecheck your course selection and registration.

Saint John undergraduate students: Contact your academic advisor at sjadvising@unb.ca. You can follow up with a request after five days if you have not received an answer back.

Graduate students: Reach out to your supervisor for course selection assistance.
