Financial assistance

An offer of financial assistance is subject to availability:

  • $16,000 for the first two years of full-time MSc students
  • $17,000 for the first four years of full-time PhD students

Discuss with your supervisor in advance how this may change if you were to win a scholarship or award after the financial offer. 

Your funding as a graduate student comes from three sources:

  • Graduate Student Teaching Assistant (GSTA), awarded for demonstrating in laboratories and marking assignments
  • Graduate Research Award (GRA), given by the Graduate School for research work
  • Graduate Academic Award (GAA), paid from the supervisor's research grants

Scholarships, bursaries and prizes 

The William S. Lewis Doctoral Fellowship 

The Lewis Fellowship is awarded alternately to graduate students in SSHRC and NSERC (science and engineering) disciplines. The fellowship is normally help for four years and is valued at $25,000. 

The nomination must be submitted to the School of Graduate Studies by Feb. 1 and must include:

  • academic transcripts from all institutions attended
  • curriculum vitae, including information about awards, citations, publications, conference presentations, relevant research or job experience
  • description of the candidate's intended dissertation topic, written either by the nominator or the candidate (indicate author)
  • letter of nomination from the Dean, Chair or Director of Graduate Studies in the GAU, outlining why this candidate is worthy of nomination
  • any essay, poster, conference paper, or other piece of documentation that the nominator may wish to include as evidence of the qualities of the candidate

In addition, a number of awards are available to Faculty of Science graduate students.
