Research programs

We offer a variety of post-graduate and research opportunities for those interested in studying technological innovation and developing industry best practices and frameworks. Our researchers contribute significantly to the global discussion around technology commercialization, entrepreneurship and product development, as well as energy transformation, blockchain and decentralized finance, and machine learning and AI.

Energy Transformation and Innovation wing

Energy Transformation and Innovation (ETI) is the research wing of the J Herbert Smith Centre for Technology Management & Entrepreneurship. In partnership with Siemens Canada and NB Power, ETI is looking at solutions that electrical utilities need and the new business models that will allow them to survive and thrive. ETI also plays a significant role in developing best practices and analytical frameworks in the fast-changing energy sector.

Deep Change Initiative

The Deep Change Initiative seeks to explore and advance research related to deep change. Its core mission is three-fold:

  1. To contribute to advancing a provincial conversation on the need for and approaches to the deep change agenda
  2. To identify and articulate a research framework to support this agenda
  3. To identify and find ways to support researchers who are working on elements of the agenda

I-STEM

The I-STEM Program at the J. Herbert Smith Centre is based on the I-Corps methodology created by the National Science Foundation in the United States. I-STEM teaches investigators and researchers to identify valuable product opportunities that can emerge from academic research and offers entrepreneurship training to participants through a targeted curriculum.

Innovation seminars

Seminars are held regularly throughout the academic year on a wide variety of topics relating to innovation to give you access to world-renown experts, and keep you up-to-date on the latest methods, ideas and concepts.

These seminars are open to faculty, PhD and graduate students and are aimed to spur healthy academic curiosity in the research minds. In addition to keeping the research community aware of the latest global developments in the area of innovation, these seminars help to kindle the research spirit in young graduate students.

Labs

Sys-MoDEL: System-Level Model Development Engineering Lab

This research laboratory, led by Dr. Kush Bubbar, focuses on the application of contemporary system modelling and simulation techniques to support research and product development.
