Fitness testing

REDS Recreation conducts fitness tests and job-related assessments for individuals and groups. Testing services include (but are not limited to): body composition analysis, VO2 max testing, general fitness testing, strength testing and occupational testing (e.g., PARE Test).

Fitness testing fees

  • Body composition: $45 members | $50 non-members
  • Advanced body composition analysis: $88 members | $103 non-members
  • General Fitness Assessment (CSEP PATH): $72 members | $82 non-members
  • Indirect VO2 max: $48 members, up to 6 people | $58 non-members, up to 6 people
  • Strength testing: $60 members | $70 non-members
  • Vo2 max: $103 members | $128 non-members
  • Senior Fitness Test: $60 members | $70 non-members

  • COPAP: $82 for members and non-members
  • FFE testing: $72 for members and non-members

Fitness and occupational testing details

This assessment uses skinfold calipers on 7 sites of the body to assess body composition. You will receive your body fat percentage, along with fat free mass and fat mass measurements.

Important Information and Pre-Test Instructions:

  • No food, drink, or exercise at least 4 hours prior to testing.
  • Use the restroom before testing, if necessary.
  • Don’t apply any lotions or skin creams prior to your test.
  • What to wear:
    • Loose shorts or shorts that don’t go passed mid-thigh along with a loose t-shirt/tank top/sports bra

This assessment is done using the Bod Pod system which is considered the gold standard for body composition analysis. You will receive body fat percentage, fat free mass and fat mass measurements as well as your estimated resting metabolic rate and total energy expenditure.

Important Information and Pre-Test Instructions:

  • No food, drink, or exercise at least 4 hours prior to testing.
  • Use the restroom before testing, if necessary.
  • Don’t apply any lotions or skin creams prior to your test.
  • Remove glasses and jewelry (if possible).
  • Wear minimal, form-fitting clothing (there will be a spot to change)
    • Thin fabric shorts, lycra/spandex-type swimsuit or single-layer compression bike-style shorts (no padding) OR Lycra/spandex-type swimsuit or bike-style shorts and sports bra (no wire or padding)
  • Because of the sensitivity of the equipment, schedule subsequent visits under the same conditions (time of day, hydration levels, amount of facial and body hair, same day of cycle (women), etc.
  • A swim cap will be provided to compress any air pockets within the hair.

The General Fitness Assessment gives you a snapshot of your overall fitness by assessing your strength, balance, flexibility, and sub-maximal aerobic capacity.

The Indirect VO2 max will estimate your VO2 max through submaximal effort. You’ll get an understanding of your estimated aerobic fitness.

Strength testing evaluates a muscle or muscle groups ability to generate force. The assessment can be tailored to align with your specific goals.

The Senior Fit test is a series of six exercises designed to evaluate the physical fitness of older adults.

The VO2 max assessment is measured using a metabolic cart. The assessment will determine your maximal oxygen consumption which is a key indicator of cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance. The assessment is tailored to your specific goals and fitness level.

The PARE (Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation) is a physical fitness test used by many law enforcement agencies to assess an applicant’s ability to perform the physically demanding tasks required for the job.

Important Information and Pre-Test Instructions:

  • This is a physically demanding test. Come prepared.
  • Proper clothing and footwear to run the test are required. 
  • Bringing a water bottle is recommended. 
  • Cancelled tests are subject to a $25 cancellation fee. Rescheduled tests will not be subject to a fee.
  • Limit food or drink at least 2 hours prior to testing
  • Limit caffeine and/or nicotine at least 4 hours prior to the testing
  • Avoid vigorous exercise 24 hours prior to your assessment

The FFE (Function Fitness Evaluation) is an entry level fitness test required for any Holland College Professional Firefighter applicants.

  • You should be consistently physically active prior to completing this test. Please arrive prepared.
  • Proper clothing and footwear to run the test are required. 
  • Bringing a water bottle is recommended.
