REDS Recreation facilities

With modern equipment, a spacious layout and panoramic views, the University of New Brunswick is home to the province's finest fitness facilities at REDS Recreation.

Aitken University Centre

The Aitken University Centre is UNB’s ice arena, located at the top of campus. The Aitken Centre is home to the UNB REDS hockey teams, the intramural hockey program, various sport clubs and open skate.

The Richard J. CURRIE CENTER

Located on the first floor of the CURRIE CENTER, this double-court gymnasium is home to REDS Recreation intramural indoor sports, various sport clubs and open-recreation activities. During open-recreation times, members can rent out equipment such as basketballs, soccer balls and badminton rackets.


Our efficiently organized free weight area is perfect for the beginner or experienced exerciser.

In the free weight room, you will find the following equipment:

  • 6 multi-station racks (2 Eleiko Olympic Weightlifting Competition sets) 
  • 9 benches (flat, decline and adjustable)
  • dumbbells, ranging from from 5lbs-120lbs 
  • Landmine, curl bars, plyometric boxes, bands, mats, foam rollers and more.

Many of our group fitness and fee-based programs take place in the Hatheway Studio on the second floor of the CURRIE CENTER. A beautiful view and natural lighting create a relaxing environment for Yoga, Pilates and dance classes.


Several of REDS Recreation's group fitness and fee-based programs are held in the multi-purpose room on the second floor of the CURRIE CENTER. It's ideal for hosting a variety of fitness classes.


The Reilly Family Spin Room is on the third floor of the CURRIE CENTER. The room has 25 spin bikes which members can use at any time. Members can also take part in the cycling classes found on our group fitness schedule.


This spacious area contains sections for both cardio and strength training equipment, as well as a stretching area.

Cardio equipment

REDS Recreation has over 40 pieces of cardio equipment featuring 15” LCD screens and iPod docks. The cardio area features: 

  • 12 treadmills
  • 7 upright bikes
  • 4 recumbent bikes
  • 4 stair climbers
  • 7 ellipticals
  • 3 AMTs
  • 2 rowing machines
  • 20+ indoor cycling bikes

Strength training equipment

We have many pieces of strength training equipment to work various muscles of the body! This includes selectorized equipment, cable machines, dumbbells and benches. We also have a variety of small accessories for conditioning, balance and flexibility including:

  • plyometric boxes
  • bosu balls
  • medicine balls
  • stretch bands
  • mats
  • foam rollers
  • medicine balls

Lady Beaverbrook Gym

The Lady Beaverbrook Gym is used for REDS Recreation programs as well as for external rentals. Campus groups and individuals may reserve the gym for 1-hour periods, based on availability.

Our boulder-dedicated climbing wall is located in the basement of the L.B. Gym. Climbers are challenged by the wall’s mixed terrain and are protected by large crash pads rather than ropes.

The Sir Max Aitken Pool is the most heavily used area of the L.B. Gym. It features six lanes and a diving tank. URec offers a variety of water activities to university students,REDS Recreation members and the greater Fredericton community, such as: swim lessons, bronze medallion/ bronze cross classes and lifeguard certification courses. We also offer adult lap swims and open recreation swims for members.

There are two squash courts located in the L.B. Gym. Access to the squash courts is included in REDS Recreation base and combined memberships. Racquets and balls are available for rent free of charge. Bookings are accepted one day in advance at 506-447-3157 or in person at the information desk in the L.B. Gym.
