Benefit from our small class sizes

Our careful supervision ensures that you can realize your full potential in a collegial environment.

Our program provides excellent preparation for doctoral studies in history and advanced studies in other fields. A number of our MA graduates have gone on to careers in academia; others have achieved success as civil servants, educators and consultants.

Program options

You can complete an MA in History through one of two options:

MA by thesis program requirements:

  • the completion of 15ch of graduate courses (including Hist6925, Hist6935 and Hist6945)
  • possible language requirements, depending on the field of study
  • the completion of a thesis of approximately 100 pages of text, based upon substantial primary research

This option is designed to be completed in five semesters.

MA by report program requirements:

  • the completion of 18ch of graduate courses (including Hist6925, Hist6935 and Hist6945)
  • possible language requirements, depending on the field of study
  • the completion of a report of approximately 40 to 60 pages of text that involves original research

This option is designed to be completed in three semesters.

For more detailed information, see the guidelines for MA and PhD students.

Language requirements

All MA students completing reports or theses in Canadian history must demonstrate an adequate reading knowledge of French.

The language requirements for MA students working on other subjects are determined by the supervisor.

There are also other scholarships and awards available.

We strongly encourage MA applicants and students to apply for Masters’ Scholarships from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. We provide guidance for all current students who are interested in applying for these awards.
