Masters in history

Our MA program enables you to develop advanced research, analytical and communication skills through a combination of coursework and original research under the direction of an established scholar.

Benefit from our small class sizes

Our careful supervision ensures that you can realize your full potential in a collegial environment.

Our program provides excellent preparation for doctoral studies in history and advanced studies in other fields. A number of our MA graduates have gone on to careers in academia; others have achieved success as civil servants, educators and consultants.

Program options

You can complete an MA in History through one of two options:

MA by thesis program requirements:

  • the completion of 12ch of graduate courses (including Hist6925 and Hist6935)
  • possible language requirements, depending on the field of study
  • the completion of a thesis of approximately 100 pages of text, based upon substantial primary research

This option is designed to be completed in five semesters.

MA by report program requirements:

  • the completion of 15ch of graduate courses (including Hist6925 and Hist6935)
  • possible language requirements, depending on the field of study
  • the completion of a report of approximately 40 to 60 pages of text that involves original research

This option is designed to be completed in three semesters.

For more detailed information, see the guidelines for MA and PhD students.

Language requirements

All MA students completing reports or theses in Canadian history must demonstrate an adequate reading knowledge of French.

The language requirements for MA students working on other subjects are determined by the supervisor.

How to apply

Your application must be supported by three references, including at least two professors who can comment in detail on your academic abilities and potential.

Your application will be used to make decisions about admission and funding, so it’s worth taking time to prepare it carefully.

Funding

MA students are eligible for up to five semesters of funding, provided they are successful in the Faculty of Arts funding competition.

There are also other scholarships and awards available.

We strongly encourage MA applicants and students to apply for Masters’ Scholarships from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council. We provide guidance for all current students who are interested in applying for these awards.
