Marine biology

We are one of only a few university campuses in Canada offering a BSc. in marine biology.

Our professors are internationally-recognized in the field and our campus is well equipped to offer this program because of our ideal location on the St. John-Kennebecasis River estuarine complex.

The marine biology program is a general synopsis of the discipline with special emphasis on Canadian east coast waters. Marine biology students at UNB Saint John receive a broad, basic training that will allow them to qualify for a wide range of employment opportunities, both in Canada and abroad.

Our past graduates are employed in:

  • government departments

  • private enterprises
  • aquaculture industry
  • universities

Our students with good records may pursue postgraduate research and training in marine biology at either the MSc. or PhD level in Saint John as well.

Marine fall semester

Based at the Huntsman Marine Science Centre (HMSC) in picturesque St. Andrews, the Marine Fall Semester is an intensive, 12-week immersion semester offered on a biennial basis, in a marine setting and providing students with a hands-on study experience of diverse marine organisms, including mammals (whales and seals), algae, fish and invertebrates.

Course of study

The semester consists of five courses worth a total of 19 credits. It is equivalent to a full-semester course load, and students are expected to take all five courses.

Three courses run for two to four consecutive weeks each. Two courses run throughout the semester.

The semester involves lectures, research seminars, discussions, labs, field trips and independent research projects. It is designed to promote critical thinking and expose students to innovative research in marine biology.
