Installation ceremony

Join us for a special installation ceremony as we welcome Cheyenne Joseph as UNB’s newest Piluwitahasuwin.

Guided by tradition and respect, the University of New Brunswick (UNB) will host the official installation of Cheyenne Joseph as Piluwitahasuwin on Oct. 10.

The Piluwitahasuwin, or the Associate Vice‐President Indigenous Engagement (AVP), serves as a vital link between the university and Wabanaki and Indigenous communities.

After the ceremony, join us for a reception.

About Piluwitahasuwin Cheyenne Joseph

Cheyenne’s journey through academia and healthcare has been deeply intertwined with her commitment to her Mi'kmaq community. She is dedicated to improving Indigenous representation and culturally safe healthcare services. As a Registered Nurse and a member of the Bear River First Nation in Nova Scotia, Cheyenne’s path has been marked by excellence and a relentless pursuit of positive change.

Cheyenne has two bachelor of science degrees and a master of public health degree, further honing her skills and knowledge in public health. She is currently enrolled in the doctorate of public health program at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto.

During her UNB career, which dates back to 2013, Cheyenne served as a senior nursing instructor. She played a pivotal role in the development of the Indigenous health course at UNB's nursing faculty. Her contributions were instrumental in incorporating Indigenous perspectives and knowledge into the core curriculum for all nursing students. This initiative marked a significant step towards promoting cultural competence and a holistic understanding of healthcare. It established Cheyenne as a trailblazer in Indigenous health education.
