Math Camp

Recap 2025

The 23rd annual UNB-CMS Math Camp took place on May 9 & 10, 2025, bringing together 20 exceptional grade 10 students from across New Brunswick.

Selected based primarily on their excellent performance in the 2024 New Brunswick Math Competition, the students dove into quirky mathematical challenges, quick to solve problems and eager to share solutions.

Friendships were formed and much math was learned. These students left inspired to pursue math in their academic futures.

Annual UNB-CMS Spring Math Camp

Held each May, the UNB-CMS Spring Math Camp is a three-day, invitation-only event for grade 10 students who demonstrate a passion and talent for mathematics.

Campers:

  • Work on fun and challenging math problems
  • Attend interactive talks about mathematics and its real-world applications
  • Meet UNB professors and other math-loving peers
  • Stay in residence and experience campus life

About the program

The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) began actively promoting math camps in the late 1990s to foster mathematical talent among Canadian youth.

The first camp was held in 1998, which took place in Waterloo (funded by The Canadian Mathematical Society) and by 1999 there were three across the country. That number has grown, with 18 camps running nationwide last year.

In 1999, the Imperial Oil Charitable Foundation became the title sponsor of the CMS Math Camp Program, helping expand opportunities for students from coast to coast.

In 2007, the foundation shifted its focus to support Canada's International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) team, the CMS Math Camps program continues to be supported by:

UNB has proudly hosted its own CMS Math Camp every year since 2000, with the exception of Covid-related cancellations in 2020, 2021, 2022. The UNB camp receives additional support from the Atlantic Association for Research in the Mathematical Sciences (AARMS), the Government of New Brunswick and of course UNB.

Each camp is unique in size and structure, but they all share a common purpose: to encourage the exploration, enjoyment and enrichment of mathematics.
