Welcome to graduate studies in Sociology at the University of New Brunswick. Whether you are about to begin graduate studies for a Master of Arts (MA) degree, or you are continuing towards a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), the UNB Sociology Graduate Program offers a vibrant and supportive environment to meet your learning and career goals.
Our research-based graduate programs strive to acquaint students with the theoretical traditions and methodological skills of the discipline. The UNB Sociology department is small enough for students to receive personalized attention, yet large enough to offer a wide range of scholarly opportunities.
Students are invited to pursue your own special areas of interest, all while becoming familiar with the development of sociological perspectives as well as academic study, research and writing.
The MA program aims to ensure that you acquire an in-depth knowledge of sociological theory, research methodologies and the specific subject area that you are investigating through a thesis.
The PhD program is fundamentally research-based, aiming to help develop your competence to undertake independent research and make original contributions to sociological knowledge, culminating in a dissertation.
Recent graduates from these programs have moved on to rewarding positions in government, private industry, not-for-profit sector, and academic and research institutions.
Our faculty and supervisors maintain provincially, nationally and internationally recognized research programs. We are here to answer your questions about graduate study in Sociology—reach out and contact us.
