Program-specific requirements

We use admission averages to evaluate high school students for admission to the University of New Brunswick.

Required courses

Students must complete six specific high school courses, according to their program of choice. UNB takes the overall average of the high school grades achieved in these six courses to calculate the student’s "minimum admission average", which is used to determine admissibility. Required courses, by program, are outlined in the chart below.

Courses in English as a Second Language (ESL) and/or other English language acquisition courses do not satisfy the Senior English Literature requirement.

For students who are taking required courses in the second semester of grade 12, and therefore don’t have access to their grades when they apply, the prerequisite course (usually grade 11) will be used to make a grade estimate for the grade 12 course required for admission to your selected program of study. Please note that UNB does not accept 'mid-term' grades.

Electives

Electives are additional courses that may be used toward your admission average. If you have multiple elective courses that UNB considers acceptable and appropriate for the degree to which you are applying, UNB will choose the elective courses with the highest grades to consider toward your admission average.

UNB groups electives into five groups:

Group 1: Senior Secondary Additional or Advanced Math, Biology, Chemistry, Computer / Information Technology, French, Geography, History, Geology, Law, Political Science, Science, Physics, Sociology, Environmental Studies.

Group 2: Senior Secondary Accounting, Business Studies, Marketing.

Group 3: Senior Secondary Communication, Art, Music, Drama.

Group 4: Senior Secondary Computer Assisted Drafting (CAD), Electronics.

Group 5: Senior Secondary Health or Physical Education.

Please note: Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to any program. Contact a recruiter for more details.
