The Atlantic Provinces Linguistic Association (APLA) was founded in 1977 to promote the study of languages and linguistics in Eastern Canada and was recognized in 1992 as a national organization by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
The association hosts a conference every two years in the fall at a centre of higher education. Topics cover all areas of linguistics.
The most recent conference, APLA 45, was held on October 25 - 26, 2024, and was organized by the Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John’s, NL. The theme was “Language, Diversity and Inclusion”.
The next conference, APLA 46, will be hosted in fall 2026 by the Université de Moncton in New Brunswick.
The Association's journal Linguistica Atlantica is published annually.
