HIST3053Berlin: From Empire to Republic (O)3 ch (3C) (W) (EL)
This course uses the city of Berlin to examine Modern German history. In visits to key historical sites, we will discuss the royal history of the Imperial period, soldiers and civilians in the two world wars, cultural innovation in the Weimar Republic, and the crimes of National Socialism. We will use the city landscape to talk about communism and capitalism during the Cold War, the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, and the challenges and opportunities of European Union in the twenty-first century.
