Benefits for retired UNB employees

Your benefits are an important part of your overall retirement. We are pleased to offer a comprehensive array of valuable retiree benefits to protect your health, your family and your way of life.

Understanding your benefits

In order to be eligible for post-retirement benefits you were required to have active employee benefit plans at your date of retirement, and you must have provided your decision to continue coverage prior to your retirement date. If at any time, you opt out of the post-retirement plans, you are unable to opt back into these plans.

Premiums for post-retirement benefits are paid monthly and must continue to be paid to maintain your coverage. Whenever possible, premiums will be set up as deductions from your pension.

In order to have coverage for your family, you must have had family coverage immediately prior to retirement. At any time during retirement, you can opt to reduce your coverage from family to single, but you cannot increase your coverage from single to family.

Determining what benefits are available to you

The following post-retirement coverages may be available to you:

  • Extended health benefits – administered by UNB
  • Prescription drugs – administered by UNB
    • Note: UNB prescription drug coverage is not available to a spouse over 65
  • Emergency medical travel insurance – administered by UNB
  • Dental plan – administered by Vestcor
  • EQ Care – administered by UNB
  • Tuition waiver – administered by UNB
  • Life insurance – administered by Manulife
  • Critical illness – administered by SSQ

All premium amounts are 100% paid by you, except for EQ Care and Tuition Waiver. EQ Care is 100% paid by UNB and 50% of Tuition fees for spouse and eligible dependents are covered by UNB.

Note: If you were a UNIFOR member under the age of 60 and have met the Factor 85 rule, your cost-sharing arrangement may vary slightly.

Extended health benefits, prescription drug and travel coverage

We are proud to provide you health care through Medavie Blue Cross. This plan covers what your provincial health plan (i.e. Medicare) does not, including prescription drugs outside of a hospital, paramedical practitioners, medical services and supplies and vision care. Enrollment in a provincial health plan is a requirement to be eligible for reimbursement of supplemental medical expenses under this plan. If you enrolled to continue the UNB health care coverage, you were automatically enrolled in the Emergency Travel Coverage through SSQ.

Extended health benefits can continue for you and, if applicable, your spouse, for each of your lifetimes. If you have dependent children, their coverage will continue until no longer considered a dependent under the policy.

Prescription drug coverage with UNB will end no later than:

  • For retiree: At the end of the month in which they turn 65 or date of death, whichever is earlier
  • For spouse: At the end of the month in which they turn 65 or date of death, whichever is earlier
  • For dependent: Based on the rules of the policy

You will have the option to convert to a prescription drug coverage with the NB Department of Health after you lose your UNB coverage. You must apply for this coverage directly with the Department of Health. Your prescription drug premium currently deducted from your monthly pension will stop when your coverage stops. For your UNB Extended Health Benefit your Medavie Blue Cross policy number should be 3700 008. See the policy for your specific coverage details.

Emergency medical travel covers a wide range of benefits which are provided as a result of an accident or unexpected illness incurred outside the participant's province of residence in Canada or outside Canada while on business or vacation. Subject to maximums, the plan pays 100% of the eligible expenses less any amount payable under any government health program.

Coverage is provided if Extended Health Benefit coverage is maintained.

Dental coverage: Your UNB Dental coverage stopped at date of retirement. You had the option to enroll in the NB Retiree Dental plan that is administered by Vestcor. Coverage for this plan is also provided by Medavie Blue Cross and it has its own unique policy number and its own Medavie Blue Cross card. See the Vestcor policy. Details of the dental plan coverage starts on page 20. Note that this booklet includes coverage for health and travel as well, however UNB retirees are only eligible to opt into the dental plan.

Coverage is provided if Extended Health Benefit coverage is maintained.

Tuition waiver: As a retiree your own tuition waiver benefit stopped at date of retirement. The 50% tuition waiver will continue for your spouse for their lifetime and eligible dependents until no longer considered dependents under the policy.

As a retiree you can regain your tuition waiver benefit by joining the UNB Retired Employee Association (UNBREA).

All Tuition waiver applications MUST be submitted prior to the first day classes for each term. See the tuition waiver section for further details and application forms.

Life insurance: Your UNB Life Insurance and Family Protection Benefit stopped at date of retirement. If you have life insurance that is post-retirement, it is not considered a UNB benefit. If you converted your UNB plan to a personal life insurance plan with Manulife and you have questions regarding this benefit, you will need to contact Manulife directly.

Critical illness: Your UNB critical illness coverage stopped at date of retirement. If you have critical illness coverage that is post-retirement, it is not considered a UNB benefit. If you converted your UNB plan to a personal critical illness plan with SSQ and you have questions regarding this benefit, you will need to contact SSQ directly.

If you have eligible dependents, they can also maintain the UNB prescription drug coverage until no longer a dependent based on the policy. An eligible spouse and/or dependent would be covered under your Extended Health Benefit card.

Where you are over the age of 65, you would have had the option to convert to a Prescription Drug coverage with the NB Department of Health after you lost your UNB coverage. You would have had to apply for this coverage directly with the Department of Health. If your spouse is also over the age of 65, they would have had to apply for this coverage as well. Your monthly Prescription Drug premium is paid as a pre-authorized payment from your bank account. Prescription drug coverage with UNB for you as a surviving spouse may continue as follows:

If you are under the age of 65, you are eligible to maintain the UNB prescription drug coverage until the end of the month in which you turn 65. If you have eligible dependents, they can also maintain the UNB prescription drug coverage until no longer a dependent based on the policy. This coverage would be covered under your Extended Health Benefit card. Once you reach the age of 65 you will have the option to convert to the NB Senior Drug Plan offered by the NB Department of Health.

If you are over the age of 65, you would have had the option to convert to a prescription drug coverage with the NB Department of Health after you lost your UNB coverage. You would have had to apply for this coverage directly with the Department of Health. Your monthly Prescription Drug premium is paid as a pre-authorized payment from your bank account. Medavie Blue Cross is the service provider for the post-retirement and survivor Extended Health, Prescription Drugs and Dental benefits noted in each of the scenarios listed above.

UNB Policies: 03700 007, 03700 008, 03700 009, 03700 013

Medavie Blue Cross is the best first point of contact when you have questions regarding your coverages. Please note, when you reach the point of transitioning to the Department of Health NB Senior Drug plan you will potentially have three (3) Medavie Blue Cross cards, each providing a different coverage:

  • UNB Extended Health Benefits
  • Vestcor NB Retiree Dental Plan
  • Department of Health NB Senior Drug Plan

It is important that you familiarize yourself with the benefits that each card provides, as you must present the applicable card to your service provider in order to be covered. Also, if you contact Medavie Blue Cross you may wish to let them know that you have multiple cards for your coverage.

Participating pharmacies: UNB has partnered with various pharmacies who offer reduced dispensing fees. You are eligible for these reduced fees while your Prescription Drug coverage remains under a UNB policy (starting with 03700).

Over-age dependents: If you have an over-age dependent, it is important that you submit an over-age dependent form to People & Culture no later than August 31 of each year, otherwise their coverage will be terminated. Dependent children are eligible for benefits if they are less than 19 years of age or, if 19 years of age but less than 24 years of age, they must be attending an accredited educational institution, college or university on a full-time basis.

Submitting a claim: You can submit a claim by mail, an online account or a mobile app.

Blue Advantage: Blue Cross members can save on medical, vision care and many other products and services offered by participating providers across Canada with Blue Advantage.


Telus Health Virtual Care provides secure online access to medical practitioners and nurses via your computer, tablet, or smartphone and is available 24/7 – a virtual walk-in clinic.

As a retiree or a survivor of a UNB employee or retiree, you are able to access this coverage if you are currently enrolled in any of the post-retirement benefits that remain with UNB.

In order to set up your initial registration you will require your UNB employee ID (Colleague ID), as a unique identifier to validate your coverage. If you do not know your ID, or you are a surviving family member with UNB benefits, please contact Sherri Robichaud at sherrir@unb.ca or email people@unb.ca.


The service provider for Emergency Travel is SSQ. If you have the UNB Extended Health Benefit plan you are automatically eligible for this travel insurance.

It is important to note the following:

  • as a retiree there is a six (6) month pre-existing condition clause that applies, this may have an impact on your claim
  • coverage is limited to a maximum duration of 180 days with respect to any one trip, you must return to the province you reside in to reset the 180 day count

As a retiree your own tuition waiver benefit stopped at date of retirement. However, you can regain your tuition waiver benefit by joining the UNB Retired Employee Association (UNBREA). If you wish to enroll in a course as a retiree, please contact Sherri Robichaud, HR Assistant (Benefits & Pensions), People & Culture. She will confirm enrollment eligibility and provide you with the appropriate form.

The 50% tuition waiver will continue for your spouse for their lifetime and eligible dependents until no longer considered dependents under the policy.
