Canada Graduate Masters Scholarship information

The objective of the Canada Gradate Scholarships Masters program is to help develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies.

Value $17,500 for 12 months
Special Funding
  • Black student researchers - CGS-M applicatants that self-identify as Black and provide consent in their application can be considered for funds designated for specfic groups. Each agency has a limited number of additional CGS-M awards reserved for this initiative.
  • Indigenous Scholars Awards and Supplements Pilot Initiative - SSHRC and NSERC will provide financial support to meritorious Indigenous students who have applied to the CGS-M. 
    • Indigenous Scholars Award - $17,500
    • Indigenous Scholars Supplement - $5,000

Application Process

Eligible students can apply to up to three institutions by completing and submitting an application within the Research Portal, and will include:

  • a Canadian Common CV
  • A completed application form (Research Portal)

Transcripts

Up-to-date and official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate studies must be included in the application.

Deadline

Deadline for applications to be submitted within the Research Portal is December 1 annually.

Selection Criteria

Applications are reviewed based on Academic Excellence, Research Potential and Personal Characteristics and Interpersonal Skills.

Results

Results are released to all students on April 1 annually and can be viewed in the Research Portal.

CIHR Strategic Master's Award

The objective of the Strategic Master's Award program is to provide financial support to Master's level scholars that are conducting research specific to priority research areas and help develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies.

Priority research areas:

  • CIHR - Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies: The CRPPHE's mandate is to grow Canada's research in preparedness, prevention, response, and recovery from pandemics and public health emergencies. Applications are encouraged in areas including (but not limited to) those that are focused on questions requiring One Health approches, more than one of the emergency management pillars (i.e., preparedness, prevention, response, and recovery), and/or spanning more than one pillar of health research, i.e. biomedical; clinical; health systems services; and poplulation health.
  • CIHR - Institute of Genetics: Applications must focus of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and Health Data Science in genetics and genomics. Applications that address health equity, sex and gener and/or Indigenous health and wellness issues are encouraged.
  • CIHR - Institute of Gender and Health: Applications must focus on Sex, Gender and Intersectionality in Health Research. The IGH mandate, inlcudes but is not limited to 2S/LBTQIA+ Health and Wellness and Women's Health through an intersectional lens as well as race, racism, gender and health.
  • CIHR - Institue of Indigenous Peoples' Health: First Nations, Inuit and/or Métis Health and Indigenous Health. IIPH fosters the advancement of a national health research agenda to improve and promote the health of First Nations, Inuit and Métis People in Canada, through research, knowledge translations and capacity building.
