Atlantic Provinces Linguistic Association

The Atlantic Provinces Linguistic Association (APLA) was founded in 1977 to promote the study of languages and linguistics in Eastern Canada and was recognized in 1992 as a national organization by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The Association hosts an annual conference each fall at a centre of higher education in the area . Topics cover all areas of linguistics. In 2017 the conference took place at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia, and in 2018 it was hosted by Dalhousie University, Halifax. The site for the 2019 conference will be the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton campus. The Association's journal, Linguistica Atlantica, is published annually and can found online at https://journals.lib.unb.ca/index.php/la/issue/archive

Conference Theme: Phraseology in All its Aspects

Keynote speakers: Gaétane Dostie, Université de Sherbrooke; David Beck, University of Alberta

We invite proposals, in English or French, related to the conference theme: phraseologized expressions as a challenge for linguistic theory, translation, NLP and language teaching; lexical, syntactic and morphological phrasemes from both synchronic and diachronic viewponts, in intra- and inter- linguistic/cultural perspectives.

Papers are also invited for general sessions on any aspect of theoretical and applied linguistics as well as translation studies.

Graduate students are especially encouraged to submit.

Papers are 30 minutes in length (20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for discussion).

Anonymous abstracts should be no more than 300 words in length, excluding title and references. On a separate page, please list your paper title, name, affiliation (indicate if you are a student), your current electronic address, and any audiovisual equipment needed for your presentation.

Proceedings of the conference will be made available as an open access publication. A volume featuring a selection of presented papers is foreseen as well.

The registration fee for the conference is $75 ($40 for retirees and $20 for students). Presenters who are not members of the Atlantic Provinces Linguistic Association (APLA) are expected to pay an annual membership fee of $25 ($10 for students) in addition to the registration fee.

Linguistica Atlantica

Linguistica Atlantica is the journal of the Atlantic Provinces Linguistics Association and publishes peer reviewed articles in any area of linguistics. Languages of publication are English or French.

​Submissions of papers or proposals should​ be sent to ​Paul De Decker pauldd@mun.ca

They should conform to the Linguist Link's Unified style sheet for Linguistics.

The papers should be saved in Word and pdf and the two anonymous versions should be attached to an e-mail message containing the author’s information.
