Atlantic Provinces Linguistic Association

The Atlantic Provinces Linguistic Association (APLA) was founded in 1977 to promote the study of languages and linguistics in Eastern Canada and was recognized in 1992 as a national organization by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The Association hosts an annual conference each fall at a centre of higher education in the area . Topics cover all areas of linguistics. In 2017 the conference took place at Cape Breton University in Sydney, Nova Scotia, and in 2018 it was hosted by Dalhousie University, Halifax. The site for the 2019 conference will be the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton campus. The Association's journal, Linguistica Atlantica, is published annually and can found online at https://journals.lib.unb.ca/index.php/la/issue/archive

Conference Theme: Metaphor, Language Theory, and Cognitive Linguistics

Call for Papers

Authors are invited to submit abstracts on their research, in English or French, in any area of linguistics and especially on the conference theme, which seeks to explore new discoveries in the areas of metaphor in particular or figurative language in general, viewed from the perspective of cognitive linguistics. Graduate students are welcome. Presentations are 30 minutes (20 minutes for presentation and 10 for discussion).

Abstract Submissions

Abstracts should be no more than 300 words, excluding title and references. The deadline for submissions is Friday, August 30, 2019. Abstracts will be peer-reviewed and replies sent as promptly as possible.

Please submit your anonymous abstract by email to APLA43@unb.ca as an attachment (preferably in MSWord or pdf). In the subject field of the email, enter “APLA 43 Abstract”. In the body of the email, include:

  1. Your name and affiliation
  2. Email address, postal address, and phone number
  3. The session the abstract is for (a) the conference theme or (b) other aspects of linguistics (e.g. regional language varieties, computational linguistics, semantics, phonology, syntax, etc.)

The registration fee for the conference is $100 ($60 for retired persons and $40 for students). All presenters must be members of the Atlantic Provinces Linguistic Association (APLA). The annual membership fee of $30 ($15 for students) may be paid at the conference. For more information, please visit:

Journal call for papers

Linguistica Atlantica

Linguistica Atlantica is the journal of the Atlantic Provinces Linguistics Association and publishes peer reviewed articles in any area of linguistics. Languages of publication are English or French.

​Submissions of papers or proposals should​ be sent to ​Paul De Decker pauldd@mun.ca

They should conform to the Linguist Link's Unified style sheet for Linguistics.

The papers should be saved in Word and pdf and the two anonymous versions should be attached to an e-mail message containing the author’s information.
