Matthew Wegener is Associate Professor of Accounting in the Faculty of Business. Dr. Wegener holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration (Accounting) from HEC Montréal, and an M.Sc. in Management (Accounting) and a Bachelor of Accounting from Brock University.

During his studies he held numerous scholarships including the SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship and was inducted into the Brock University Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, an honour society representing business excellence, in 2009.

His primary research focuses on the motivation for corporate social responsibility reporting and the potential benefits for shareholders and/or other relevant stakeholder groups.

He is particularly interested in the impact that reporting information for multiple stakeholder groups has on the quality of information disclosed.

He has presented his work at the Canadian Academic Accounting Association Annual Conferences and the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada Conferences where he won the Best Paper Award, Accounting Division in 2010. His research is published in Accounting Perspectives.

Dr. Wegener teaches both financial accounting and managerial accounting to undergraduates and graduates respectively. He believes in a student-centered approach to learning and views his role as a facilitator of education.

He pursues the scholarship of teaching and learning with the same rigour as his primary research. He has pedagogical publications in Accounting Education and Advances in Accounting Education: Teaching and Curriculum Innovation (Advances in Accounting Education, Volume 13). Dr. Wegener joined the Faculty of Business in 2015.
