Explores histories of madness in Britain and the Americas from early modern madhouses to present day mass incarceration. This course considers the greate range of ideas aobut madness, efforts to treat and contan it, and the lived experiences of individuals deemed 'mad'. Topics include community, grassroots, and medical understandings of madness; madhouses, asylums, and institutional treatment; psychiatric care and rehabilitation; addiction and recovery; advocacy, activism, and rights.
