Discover the beauty and horror of tragic drama from its foundations in ancient Greece and Rome to its many reinventions in English. Explore how Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and Seneca influenced dramatists from the early modern to the contemporary eras. Examine the ways tragic drama has intervened in discourses of gender, sexuality, power, and cultural contact through lectures, discussions, and performance workshops. All texts will be read in English; no prior familiarity with the ancient world is required. NOTE: Credit cannot be counted for both AWS 3413 and ENGL 3413.
