Discover the world of comic drama from ancient Greece and Rome to its many reinventions in English. Explore ancient and modern theatre through lectures, discussions, and workshops designed to unpack the complex relationship between comedy, society, and politics. Examine how comedy destabilized hierarchies of gender, class, and status. Learn how dramatists responded to ancient comedies from the early modern to the contemporary eras. All texts will be read in English; no prior familiarity with the ancient world is required. NOTE: Credit cannot be counted for both AWS 3403 and ENGL 3403. | ||
