Our athletic facilities are opening in a limited, phased approach based COVID-19 directives and expectations of operating.

Athletics staff are committed to ensuring a safe return and enjoyable workout experience for our UNB Saint John students, faculty, and staff.

Everyone will have a role to play in providing a safe workout environment. Every effort is being made to create a positive experience for users of the athletic facilities.

Note: Everything is subject to change due to COVID-19. Information will be updated regularly as new directives are issued.


The fitness room is open Monday to Saturday. Nine cardio machines are available to book, sessions are 30 minutes maximum.

  • Monday to Friday daytime: 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m.
  • Monday and Wednesday evening: 7 p.m., 8 p.m., 9 p.m.
  • Saturday: 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m.

The machines are minimum 2 metres apart to provide a safe workout environment for all users.

Interest is increasing as people get back to working out and discover the fitness room is safe to use. Take your next step in getting back to a consistent fitness routine.

Services and amenities

  • Users are encouraged to bring their own equipment, towels, and pre-filled water bottles.
  • Washrooms, showers, and water fountains will be available.
  • The locker changing area can be used but lockers are not accessible.
  • Community memberships or day passes are not available.

Added safety and cleaning measures

The athletic facilities will be cleaned and disinfected at least twice each day.

Users must bring and wear a community face mask while inside the athletic facilities. They may remove the mask when they reach their intended workout space and again after the workout is finished.

There will be a transition period between each booking. This will allow users to safely enter and exit facilities without undue traffic and provide the staff with time to refresh workout spaces as needed.

Cardio machines have been spaced at least 2 metres (6 feet) apart so users can feel comfortable and safe while working out.

Hand sanitizer stations are available in the facilities.

Do your part

Users are expected to practice safe physical distancing, at least 2 metres (6 feet), at all times when accessing the athletic facilities. Non-compliance may result in a verbal warning, temporary suspension, or facility ban.

Users are strongly encouraged to practice good personal hygiene with frequent hand washing, use of sanitizer and appropriate cough & sneeze etiquette.

Staff will be wipe down equipment before and after each use. Disinfectant spray bottles and paper towel from touchless dispensers will be readily available for member use.

Users will be required to answer a pre-screening questionnaire for symptoms of COVID-19 prior to entering the athletic facilities.

Users who are sick, or feeling ill, need to be considerate of others and stay home.

Frequently asked questions

When will in-person group fitness classes or fee-based programs resume?

Fitness programs have begun. Walking, Virtual Yoga, Mindful Moments, Fall in Love with Running and Hiking are taking registrations.

Will sport clubs be offered?

Women’s field hockey will be practicing this fall. Contact Stephanie Guimond at stephanie.guimond@unb.ca if you're interested in practicing with the club.

When will intramural sports resume?

Thank you to all 145 students, faculty and staff who participated in the athletics survey. We are examining the results and hope to offer some of the suggestions. More information regarding campus recreation will be shared on the Seawolves Facebook page as it becomes available.

Can I book more than one workout time per day?

Yes. Consecutive booking times are permitted, but members working out at the fitness centre will be required to exit and re-enter the facility after each booking period regardless of when they entered.

Facilities will undergo a 30-minute cleaning transition after each booking period. Contact sharon.stewart@unb.ca to book your workout.

Do I need to wear a mask?

Yes. A community facemask is required in order to access the Fitness room at this time. Members may remove their mask when they reach their intended workout space. Masks must be worn at all times when moving to different areas throughout the facilities.

I have an upcoming workout time but need to cancel. What should I do?

You can cancel your workout time if necessary, but do so as soon as possible to free up your spot for another user. Contact sharon.stewart@unb.ca to cancel or rebook your workout.

Will I be able to use my favourite piece of equipment?

Booking is first come, first serve for the cardio equipment. There is no guarantee that you will get the machine you want, however, nine machines are available each hour which should provide ample opportunity.

Where can I store my belongings while working out at the fitness room?

Users should keep all belongings with them during the workout. It is strongly suggested that valuables be left at home or in the residence room while working out.

Am I restricted to where I can workout?

Yes. Only the fitness room and gym will be available. The weight room will be closed and machines other than cardio will not be accessible.

The Canada Games Stadium will be available only to internal groups – book through Sharon Stewart at sharon.stewart@unb.ca.

What measures are being taken to ensure the safety of staff?

All athletics staff will complete mandatory return-to-work orientation and training sessions prior to reopening and be required to wear a mask as per the university protocol.

Can I purchase a membership?

No. Community memberships will not be sold during the COVID-19 pandemic.
