This course is cross-listed with Gender Women Studies GWS 3114. It is an elective.
Explore the remarkable diversity of gender identities and practices of sexuality across and within cultures. Engage with the latest anthropological research on gender, sexuality, culture, and biology. Describe the culturally constructed nature of gender and sexuality, and why the idea of cultural construction is essential to understanding contemporary expressions of gender and sexuality. In-depth case studies will include gender violence, emerging forms of non-binary gender expression, gender and health, and issues facing transgender youth. Through exploring gender and sexuality, we aim to better and more fully understand this most fundamental aspect of the human experience.
Course Qualification: A minimum qualification is a MA degree in Anthropology, but a PhD is preferred. If this minimum qualification is met, academic credentials relevant to the course, professional expertise and experience relevant to the course, and teaching competence will be considered, as per the CAI Collective Agreement Criteria for Appointment 18A.03. If a teaching dossier is not on file with the Department, candidates are encouraged candidates to provide one to demonstrate teaching competence.
