Swim lessons and lifesaving society courses

URec is pleased to offer the Swim for Life program for children on Saturday mornings in the SMA Pool. We offer both private and group swim lesson to URec members and the public. 

Fall 2021 Update:

We are looking forward to the return of children's swimming lessons this fall. Due to a staffing shortage, we will be delaying the start until Saturday, Oct. 16.
Registration will take place at 2 PM on Saturday, Oct. 2. At this time group lessons will only be offered. We hope to offer both private and group lessons in the winter term. Full details of our schedule will be available in the coming weeks.

Register online, in person or over the phone. Registration for private swim lessons must be done in person. All swim lessons and course inquiries can be directed to Membership Services at 453-4579 or by e-mail.

Lifesaving Society Courses

Bronze Medallion

Prerequisite: 13 years old or completion of Bronze Star certification

Individuals who have successfully completed level 10 and who are 13+ years old can begin training to become a lifeguard. Bronze Medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water-rescue education-judgment, knowlege, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn tows and carries, and defence methods and releases in preparation for challenging rescues. 

Bronze Cross

Prerequisite: Bronze Medallion + Emergency or Workplace Standard First Aid certification. 

Bronze Cross prepares lifesavers for the safety supervision role and responsibilities of assistant lifeguards in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certification.
