PhD in English (Gender and Sexuality in Literature)

Students in the Gender and Sexuality in Literature stream will approach gender and sexuality studies through the lens of literature. They will develop a strong foundation in theoretical approaches to the field and undertake research for a thesis in a topic of their own choosing.

Our program is small and offers students attentive supervisory support.

Requirements

Students will normally undertake:

  • Theories of Gender and Sexuality in Literature: GSL Core Course (3 ch)
  • One GSL elective (3 ch)
  • Three more one-term courses (9 ch)
  • English 6100: Research Methods (6 ch)
  • English 6999: Teaching apprenticeship course
  • Two comprehensive exams (Gender and Sexuality Theory OR Women’s and Queer Literature; Field)
  • Dissertation

This program is designed to be completed in four years.
