Direct Entry PhD in English

Achieve a doctoral degree without having to complete an MA

We offer exceptional undergraduate students with honours degrees in English the opportunity to proceed directly into our PhD Program. This five-year program allows students to achieve a doctoral degree without first having to complete an MA.

Admission to the direct-entry PhD requires a GPA of at least 4.0 in the final two years of the BA in honours English. A 4.0 GPA does not guarantee admission.

Requirements

Students will normally undertake

• 9 academic courses, including six courses (18 ch) in Year 1 and three courses (9 ch) in Year 2
• English 6100: Research Methods (6 ch)
• Advanced research project
• Two comprehensive exams
• English 6999: Teaching apprenticeship course (Year 3)
• Dissertation

Any student who wishes to leave the direct-entry PhD without graduating with the doctorate, but has completed the requirements of a one-year MA, can apply to graduate with the MA.
