Research interests

My research activities are motivated by questions regarding the impact of natural environmental and anthropogenic changes on aquatic systems. I use microfossils (primarily dinoflagellate cysts, and diatoms) and geochemical tracers preserved in sediments to reconstruct changes in climatic, environmental and oceanographic conditions on time scales spanning from decades to millennia. I have a special interest in proxy development and intercomparison.

  • Interactions between climate, sea ice and primary production
  • Response of marine protists to environmental changes
  • Harmful algal blooms, from the tropics to the high latitudes
  • Human settlement and migration in relation with climate fluctuations
