Title: A Wolf in LAMs Clothing? Copyright, AI, and the Public Good.
Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and recent advances in Large Language Models (LLMs) are challenging legal and theoretical copyright frameworks across jurisdictions. As repositories and stewards of public knowledge, Libraries, Archives, and Museums (LAMs) predate any form of copyright laws and are given special status as representatives of fair access to information for the public good. This session will look at the impact of the current and potential implications of using copyright as a tool to regulate the development of AI.

Faculty/Dept: NB Institute for Research, Data and Training
Brief Bio: Donna Curtis Maillet has been the Privacy Officer for the NB Institute for Research, Data and Training (NB-IRDT) since it originated in 2015. In addition to facilitating NB-IRDT’s necessary legislative compliance as research data center, her work includes participating in national initiatives seeking to harmonize research access to personal and personal health information across Canada. Dr. Curtis Maillet serves as the lead for HDRN Canada’s privacy team.  As well as a background in library and information sciences, she holds an interdisciplinary PhD with research in science and technology studies and legal pluralism.
Title: Generative AI and Data Privacy & Ethics: Addressing the Issues.
Abstract: Rapid advances in Generative AI technologies since the fall of 2022 have introduced exciting new opportunities for data research.  We have seen a plethora of generative AI possibilities, emphasizing what can be done but not always asking, ‘should it be done?’  To ensure AI technologies continue to provide positive advancement for data research we must take the time now to address privacy and data ethics matters.   This brief talk will provide an overview of the most prevalent and harmful issues related to privacy and ethics arising from Generative AI use in data research and the approaches being proposed for mitigating potential negative outcomes.

We look forward to seeing you.
