The Monday Night Film Series presents LITTLE RICHARD: I AM EVERYTHING on Monday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Tilley Hall, room102.

What would rock’n’roll be without Little Richard? From the Rolling Stones to the Beatles to David Bowie, popular music has been shaped by trailblazer Little Richard and his larger-than-life personality. Yet few people know the true story behind one of music’s most influential figures. Lisa Cortés’ raucous doc delves into Little Richard’s queer and Black identities, ingenious music making, and late-life religiosity.

Richard Penniman, better known by his stage name Little Richard, contained multitudes. He was Black and proud in a time when white musicians like Elvis and Mick Jagger got credit for pop music’s evolution. He was outwardly queer yet denounced this later in life after inner turmoil. Little Richard was truly everything at once, unable to define or put into a box. Cortés deftly weaves together various perspectives from Black, queer, and music scholars, as well as musicians of the time like Mick Jagger and Tom Jones, to reveal the dimensions of Penniman’s life that audiences have not seen before.

Little Richard: I Am Everything was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize - Documentary at Sundance 2022, as well as for the Audience Award at SXSW 2022. This doc will leave audiences buzzing with its rockin’ soundtrack and shocking details of Little Richard’s life.

"Little Richard: I Am Everything, directed with supreme love and insight by Lisa Cortés, is the enthralling documentary that Little Richard deserves. It’s a movie that understands, from the inside out, what a great and transgressive artist he was, how his starburst brilliance shifted the whole energy of the culture — but also how the astonishing radical nature of what he did, from almost the moment it happened, got shoved under the rug of the official narrative of rock ‘n’ roll.”
