We encourage all members of our community to participate in one of two consultation sessions being held to provide faculty, staff and students with the opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback about UNB’s proposed Chosen Name and Gender Identity Policy. The draft policy outlines a process for students, faculty and staff to operate within the University using a chosen first name and/or middle name that is different from their legal name. When implemented, it will contribute to a positive environment for faculty, staff and students—especially those who are trans and non-binary—to express and affirm their gender identity, and support others whose chosen name may differ from the name they were given at birth. 

Please review the consultation background document and the proposed policy ahead of our discussion. The two sessions will be chaired by Dr. Kathy Wilson and other members of the Chosen Name Policy Working Group. Consultation sessions will take place at the following times: 

Nov. 3, 3:30 to 5 p.m. (Join Microsoft Teams Meeting)
Nov. 5, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. (Join Microsoft Teams Meeting)

Under this policy, students, faculty and staff will have the ability to provide or change their name and gender without having to change their name legally or provide a reason for their request. Additionally, the accompanying documentation previously requested to support a change of name or gender, will no longer be required in most circumstances.

UNB is committed to providing a welcoming, supportive and inclusive environment in which to study and work. Fostering such an environment requires a range of policies and practices that acknowledge the diversity of our community and provide support for our community members. The draft Chosen Name and Gender Identity Policy is an important addition to our equity-related policies including Declaration of Rights and Responsibilities and the Discrimination, Sexual Harassment and Harassment Policy, which can both be found on the UNB’s Human Rights website.
