PHOTOVOICE Seeing Religion- Muslim and Christian Interfaith Dialogue-FR

Interfaith Photo Exhibit at the UNB Art Centre - join us for the final exhibit of the year PHOTOVOICE: Seeing Religion- Muslim and Christian Interfaith Dialogue which opens November 22 and runs through December 14.  This exhibit probes the lived experience of faith from two seemingly divergent perspectives.

Since the beginning of the fall term, a group of Muslim and Christian university students and young adults have met regularly to discuss ideas about religion and to learn about each other’s religious identities.  PHOTOVOICE: Seeing Religion- Muslim and Christian Interfaith Dialogue was facilitated by Dr. Catherine Holtmann, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of New Brunswick.  According to Dr. Holtmann, “this project aims to break down stereotypes about religious students and misconceptions about Muslims in order to promote better understanding and respect for diversity.”  The interfaith group has been using the “photovoice” process as a guiding principal for their discussions.

Photovoice is a participatory action research method that was introduced in the 1990s to address significant social problems. Designed to be a process that is at once authentic, analytical, proactive and empowering, it promotes social change through photo-based narratives. Rather than pushing the attitudes of outside experts, it encourages the expression of a first-person perspective, especially for at-risk or marginalized members of society; providing a voice to those who have traditionally been unheard.

PHOTOVOICE: Seeing Religion- Muslim and Christian Interfaith Dialogue is part of a larger project led by Dr. Roman Williams of Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.  The Interfaith Photovoice Initiative: Amplifying Voices through Photography, Interfaith Dialogues, and Immigrant Advocacy is an international study taking place in four sites: Virginia, Michigan, and New York in the United States and in New Brunswick, Canada.  The project is funded by the Louisville Institute.

Members of the university community and the wider Fredericton community are invited to the opening of PHOTOVOICE: Seeing Religion- Muslim and Christian Interfaith Dialogue.  Special musical guest Jordan Best of Humblist will perform a series of covers and original music on guitar and vocals.

The UNB Art Centre is located at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive, UNB Fredericton.  The galleries are open 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on weekdays and for special events. Admission is free to members of the public. Everyone welcome!
