Programs in Gender Studies

Minor in Gender Studies

Admission to the Minor is open to students majoring in any Arts discipline and could be available to students in other faculties as minors become available. Students must select the Minor in consultation with the Gender Studies Coordinator, and this should normally be done at the same time as they declare a Major. The Minor requires 24 ch, comprised of SOCI 2501 Intro to Gender and Gender Studies or GEND 2001 Introduction to Gender Studies and 21 ch selected from Gender Studies eligible courses. (NOTE: The required 24 ch does not include the prerequisites required for the Gender Studies eligible courses unless listed here in the Calendar.) A grade of C or better is required in all courses counting towards the Minor in Gender Studies.

Certificate in Gender Studies

The Certificate in Gender Studies is designed for students who have completed or are close to completing their studies, who seek an added accreditation for professional or academic reasons. They are expected to be already prepared for upper-level undergraduate study.

The Certificate requires 18 ch, comprised of SOCI 2501 Intro to Gender and Gender Studies or GEND 2001 Introduction to Gender Studies and an additional 15 ch selected from Gender Studies eligible courses. (NOTE: The required 18 ch does not include the prerequisites required for the Gender Studies eligible courses unless listed here in the Calendar.) A grade of C or better is required in all courses counting towards the Certificate in Gender Studies.

Individual study courses, reading courses, or any other course where the student has scope to design the course of study or the assignments may be considered for eligibility.

NOTE 1: Mandatory and elective courses taken for the Minor in Gender Studies cannot be counted towards other program requirements. However, prerequisites taken to be eligible for the mandatory and elective courses may be counted towards other programs.

NOTE: Not all courses will be offered in a given year. The list of available Gender eligible courses is updated annually by the Gender Studies Coordinator. Students seeking program credit for courses not on this list must have written approval from the Gender Studies Coordinator prior to enrolling in the course. Gender Studies students are responsible for ensuring they have completed any required prerequisites and/or acquired any necessary permissions for their Gender eligible electives.
