This course examines the core philosophical principles that shape nursing, emphasizing its ontological, epistemological, and ethical aspects. Students and instructors will participate in a shared, thoughtful, and academic learning experience through critical thinking, reflection, and dialogue. Students will also critically reflect their own standpoints in relation to others’ perspectives and ideology within social systems and structures. The course also highlights the range of research traditions in nursing and the unique knowledge that emerges from each. Emphasis will be placed on the development of philosophical thinking in relation to nursing's developing disciplinary identity, the evolution of nursing theories, and the integration of philosophy into scholarly inquiry and knowledge development in nursing. Students will acquire an understanding of conceptual and theoretical frameworks from nursing and related fields that have shaped nursing knowledge and the discipline’s structure. Finally, students will establish a philosophical foundation that enables students to formulate well-informed claims. | ||
