Builds on foundational knowledge of nursing theories and critically reflects on the utility of theories in guiding advanced practice.  Explores the interplay between nursing theories and those from other disciplines and encourages development of a clear understanding of the philosophical, scientific and contextual underpinnings of the nursing profession. Students are prepared to articulate an advanced nursing perspective for engaging in leadership, clinical, consultative, and collaborative and research roles.  This is a core course in all streams.
NURS6014Philosophy of Nursing Science3 ch

This course examines the core philosophical principles that shape nursing, emphasizing its ontological, epistemological, and ethical aspects. Students and instructors will participate in a shared, thoughtful, and academic learning experience through critical thinking, reflection, and dialogue. Students will also critically reflect their own standpoints in relation to others’ perspectives and ideology within social systems and structures. The course also highlights the range of research traditions in nursing and the unique knowledge that emerges from each. Emphasis will be placed on the development of philosophical thinking in relation to nursing's developing disciplinary identity, the evolution of nursing theories, and the integration of philosophy into scholarly inquiry and knowledge development in nursing. Students will acquire an understanding of conceptual and theoretical frameworks from nursing and related fields that have shaped nursing knowledge and the discipline’s structure. Finally, students will establish a philosophical foundation that enables students to formulate well-informed claims.

NURS6015Nursing Doctoral Seminar I 3 ch

This doctoral-level seminar provides a forum for advanced scholarly inquiry, critical analysis, and professional and scholarly discussion. Using a co-learning and facilitation approach, students will engage in facilitated dialogue, peer learning, and intellectual exchange with the course professor, student peers to support the development of knowledge and abilities required for completion of the doctoral degree. Topics will focus on key doctoral milestones such as comprehensive examination preparation, dissertation proposal development, theoretical positioning, and dissemination strategies.

NURS6018Nursing Leadership, Ethics and Health Policy3 ch
In this course students will examine leadership, ethics and health policy, exploring their intersections in the context of advanced nursing practice. Students will analyze models of leadership and their influence in the ecology of health care environments at multiple levels. Concepts related to professional advocacy and health policy as they influence advanced nursing practice and client outcomes in Primary Health Care will be explored. This is a core course for all streams.

NURS6021Qualitative Nursing Research3 ch

This course will provide a foundation for understanding qualitative design including underlying philosophical underpinnings; ethical considerations; sampling, data collection and analysis approaches; and interpretation and application of findings. Emphasis will be placed on traditional approaches; select emerging approaches will be introduced.

NURS6022Quantitative Nursing Research3 ch

This course will provide a foundation for understanding quantitative design including underlying philosophical underpinnings; ethical considerations; sampling, data collection and analysis approaches; and interpretation and application of findings. Emphasis will be placed on examining and understanding select quantitative approaches.

NURS6023Advanced Quantitative Research3 ch

This doctoral-level course focuses on the conceptualization, design, and execution of quantitative investigations aimed at advancing nursing knowledge and ultimately improving the health of individuals, populations, and/or the planet. The integral interconnections among research, theory, and practice will be emphasized as well as how the philosophical perspectives that inform nursing science have evolved over time. This course is intended to advance students’ ability to not only critically engage with quantitative methods, understand their application, and integrate them meaningfully into research, but also their ability to communicate and assist with the appropriate translation of quantitative research findings (i.e., quantitative literacy). Topics addressed include measurement and instrumentation, intervention development and testing, sampling and statistical power, data management and analysis, testing of explanatory models, statistical versus clinical significance, as well as the ethical conduct of research and the mobilization of research findings. Descriptive, correlational, comparative, quasi-experimental, experimental, survey, and mixed methods designs will be examined. Issues pertaining to the use of primary versus existing data will be explored. Threats to construct, internal, external, and statistical conclusion validity will be discussed as well as strategies to mitigate their effect.

NURS6024Advanced Qualitative Research3 ch

This doctoral-level course focuses on in-depth examination of advanced qualitative research methodologies as they apply to nursing and health sciences. Designed for PhD students with foundational knowledge of qualitative inquiry, the course is intended to deepen students’ understanding of philosophical underpinnings, epistemological stances, and methodological complexities, emphasizing links between positionality, reflexivity, and knowledge creation. Students will develop knowledge and abilities to conduct and lead all aspects of qualitative research projects including proposal development, rigour, ethics, data collection, data analysis, and interpretation are addressed. Opportunities for hands-on work with data, peer review, and methodological writing are embedded throughout.

NURS6025Knowledge Synthesis and Dissemination (Elective Course)3 ch

This doctoral-level course prepares students to conduct knowledge synthesis and disseminate findings for a variety of stakeholders. Synthesis types such as integrative, narrative, scoping and systematic reviews are covered and their relationship to evidence informed healthcare explored. Students will apply review methods to develop a research question, conduct a comprehensive literature search strategy, and to critically appraise research evidence. Emphasis is placed on using synthesized evidence to guide clinical decision-making, healthcare policy, education and research.

NURS6202Advanced Pharmacotherapeutics3 ch

This course's theoretical content focuses on the knowledge, judgement, skills and abilities necessary to apply the core nurse practitioner (NP) competency of management of the treatment of clients' health conditions by utilizing advanced pharmocotherapeutic methods.

NURS6203Advanced Pathophysiology3 ch
This course will explore pathophysiology mechanisms of altered health states. This course will provide the Nurse Practitioner student with theoretical perspectives on the mechanisms of altered functioning of human cells, organ systems, and the organism as a whole. Theoretical content will be presented in a manner that fosters synthesis of evidence by students and provides a strong conceptual foundation for the integration of health and physical assessment and diagnostic reasoning processes in relation to patient care. Differentiating pathophysiologic findings from the normal will be emphasized; relevant treatment modalities will be discussed and appraised critically. Provides essential knowledge base in pathophysiology across the life span for Nurse Practitioners.

NURS6204Roles and Issues3 ch
This course will allow the Nurse Practitioner student to discuss and investigate the role of the Nurse Practitioner. The course will also focus on the issues inherent implementing the Nurse Practitioner role.
NURS6219Final Clinical Practicum9 ch

This concentrated practicum course provides an opportunity for the synthesis on the specialized knowledge, skill, and judgment inherent in the role of the Nurse Practitioner within a collaborative, multidisciplinary team setting. Facilitated by a faculty advisor and clinical preceptor, the student assumes responsibility for providing primary care to culturally diverse clients across the life span. In addition to the clinical hours of the practicum, the course includes a seminar component that addresses professional, philosophical and ethical issues related to the role of the Nurse Practitioner. This practicum includes a minimum of 300 hours of supervised clinical practice in the role of the Nurse Practitioner.

This course combines theory and clinical practice and focuses on developing knowledge, judgement, skills and abilities necessary to understand and apply the core nurse practitioner competencies of health assessment; health promotion and disease prevention; and professional roles and responsibilities to practice. Emphasis is placed on normal biological changes, developmental tasks, and social, cultural and spiritual dimensions of health. In this course students begin to apply theoretical knowledge to the provision of primary health care to individuals, families and communities across the lifespan via 100 hours of supervised clinical practice in the role of the Nurse Practitioner.

NURS6224Primary Health Care Management: Adult 1 Theory & Clinical Practicum4 ch

Using a primary health care lens, this course combines theory and clinical practice and focuses on developing knowledge, judgement, skills and abilities necessary for management of common acute and chronic health problems of culturally diverse young to middle aged adult clients. Emphasis is placed on normal biological changes, developmental tasks, and social, cultural and spiritual dimensions of health. Focus is place on selected concepts, theories, and research applied to health promotion, health maintenance, and prevention of illness for the individual, family, and community. This course includes 100 hours of supervised clinical practice in the role of the Nurse Practitioner.

Using a primary health care lens, this course combines theory and clinical practice and focuses on developing knowledge, judgement, skills and abilities necessary for management of common acute and chronic health problems of culturally diverse pediatric clients. Emphasis is placed on normal biological changes, developmental tasks, and social, cultural and spiritual dimensions of health. Focus is place on selected concepts, theories, and research applied to health promotion, health maintenance, and prevention of illness for the individual, family, and community. This course includes 100 hours of supervised clinical practice in the role of the Nurse Practitioner.

This often involves a single student working with a faculty instructor/professor to complete a develop and complete a course designed to meet their unique needs. Together, the student and faculty instructor/professor will create a course of study and related syllabi that outlines the abilities and outcomes that will be achieved via the course.

STAT6212Health Research Statistics3 ch
Provides students with a foundation for planning, conducting, reporting and critiquing the analysis of quantitative data. An understanding of statistical procedures is fostered through the discussion of underlying concepts and principles, rather than mathematical equations. Assumptions underlying various parametric and non-parametric statistical tests are discussed, as well as strategies for testing and dealing with any violations of these assumptions. This is a core course in all streams.
