This course examines the core philosophical principles that shape nursing, emphasizing its ontological, epistemological, and ethical aspects. Students and instructors will participate in a shared, thoughtful, and academic learning experience through critical thinking, reflection, and dialogue. Students will also critically reflect their own standpoints in relation to others’ perspectives and ideology within social systems and structures. The course also highlights the range of research traditions in nursing and the unique knowledge that emerges from each. Emphasis will be placed on the development of philosophical thinking in relation to nursing's developing disciplinary identity, the evolution of nursing theories, and the integration of philosophy into scholarly inquiry and knowledge development in nursing. Students will acquire an understanding of conceptual and theoretical frameworks from nursing and related fields that have shaped nursing knowledge and the discipline’s structure. Finally, students will establish a philosophical foundation that enables students to formulate well-informed claims. | ||

| NURS6023 | Advanced Quantitative Research | 3 ch |
|---|---|---|
This doctoral-level course focuses on the conceptualization, design, and execution of quantitative investigations aimed at advancing nursing knowledge and ultimately improving the health of individuals, populations, and/or the planet. The integral interconnections among research, theory, and practice will be emphasized as well as how the philosophical perspectives that inform nursing science have evolved over time. This course is intended to advance students’ ability to not only critically engage with quantitative methods, understand their application, and integrate them meaningfully into research, but also their ability to communicate and assist with the appropriate translation of quantitative research findings (i.e., quantitative literacy). Topics addressed include measurement and instrumentation, intervention development and testing, sampling and statistical power, data management and analysis, testing of explanatory models, statistical versus clinical significance, as well as the ethical conduct of research and the mobilization of research findings. Descriptive, correlational, comparative, quasi-experimental, experimental, survey, and mixed methods designs will be examined. Issues pertaining to the use of primary versus existing data will be explored. Threats to construct, internal, external, and statistical conclusion validity will be discussed as well as strategies to mitigate their effect. | ||
| NURS6024 | Advanced Qualitative Research | 3 ch |
