| This course is intended for experienced teachers and administrators who wish to explore the philosophy behind the Middle School Movement and who want practical strategies to use in changing from a junior high school organizational model to a middle level model. Course content will include a brief history of middle schools, and examination of the characteristics and needs of the early adolescent learner, and a study of the elements of an exemplary middle school. These elements include: school atmosphere, grade configurations, instructional strategies, student-centered orientation, advisor-advisee programs, interdisciplinary teacher teams, and home/community involvement. The course will include a brief look at suggestions for educational change contained in current research literature. |
