The medal was founded by the late Sir Howard Douglas, Lieutenant-Governor of the Province of New Brunswick and first Chancellor of King's College. It is awarded for the best composition in prose or verse in the Greek, Latin or English languages, or any subject within the regular course of study pursued in the university. Undergraduate theses or reports may be considered along with essays or verse compositions produced as part of regular class work. They may be revised by the student on the basis of instructor's comments.
