Memorial Hall at UNB
Street Address: 9 Bailey Drive, Fredericton, NB
Known locally as Mem Hall, it was built as a permanent memorial for the graduates and under-graduates of UNB who gave their lives during World War One. Designed by Saint John architect F. Neil Brodie, and built by B. Mooney & Sons of Saint John, the cornerstone was laid on 23 July 1923 by Lord Byng, the Governor General and the Commander of the Canadian Corps at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. It was opened for the May 1924 encaenia exercises. Over the entrance to auditorium is a bronze plaque listing the 35 names of UNB's fallen students. The building also contains a stain glass windows in honour of George Fenwick, killed at the Battle of Passchendaele, and Franklin Rankin, killed at the Battle of Baupaume, a memorial reading desk in honour of Lieutenant John Basil Hipwell (Forestry 1915), an oak platform table in honour of Captain Robert Kilgour Shives (Forestry 1913), both killed in 1916.
