Fredericton Old Burial Ground British Garrison Memorials

In the center of the Old Burying Ground there is a memorial cross and an older cairn dedicated to members of the British Fredericton Garrison buried here, many in unmarked graves. In 1934, the cairn was erected by the York-Sunbury Historical Society. On the side facing the main path are the words “Across this flat lyeth British soldiers who died in Fredericton between 1784 and 1869.” During this period the British garrison stationed in Fredericton had played a very significant part in the development of its economic and social life. Twenty-four different British infantry regiments served in Fredericton at various times. On 13 August 1985, the then-lieutenant governor of New Brunswick, the Honourable George F.G. Stanley, unveiled the memorial cross. In his address he said “I salute the memory of the officers and men of the British garrison regiments who served in Canada between 1785 and 1869. Theirs is a tradition of service and loyalty. May we never forget them.”
