Virtual Private Network (VPN)

All UNB Sites

On April 28, UNB is upgrading its Virtual Private Network (VPN) to a newer, more secure version. At the same time, the version used now will no longer work.

What this means to you

  • You’ll need to use the new FortiClient version to continue to connect to the VPN.
  • The old version of the VPN will no longer work as of April 28.

UNB-owned computers (Mac & Windows)

  • On April 28, the new VPN will be automatically pushed out to your computer with no setup required by you.
  • You may see brief pop-ups and a FortiClient notification when the installation finishes.
  • Windows computers only: please restart your computer to complete the update.

Personal Computers (Mac & Windows)

  • Instructions on how to set up the new VPN on your personal computer will be available on the IT Services VPN page starting April 28.

Mobile Devices

Why should I use UNB’s VPN?

  • It’s secure – UNB's VPN adds an extra layer of protection when accessing UNB services off campus or on public Wi-Fi.
  • It’s convenient – Once you have the VPN client downloaded (this is a one-time step), connecting is easy – just log in using your UNBloginID@unb.ca and password, and MFA to access UNB IT resources just as if you were on campus.
  • It’s free –You can use UNB’s secure VPN for free on your computer as long as you’re an active UNB faculty, staff or student.

When should I use the VPN?

  • When you need to access secure IT services (like Colleague) while on UNB wireless and from anywhere off campus.
  • Anytime you’re connected to public wireless for added security (like at an airport or hotel). These networks are often insecure, so connecting to the VPN helps keep your device and personal information safe.
