Since its establishment in 2022, Discovery has been committed to inspiring children and youth in the Saint John community. Our goal is to acquaint them with the marvels, potentials, and prospects of a university education while fostering connections between the community and UNB. We aim to ensure that post-secondary education feels open and accessible, turning it into an achievable and exciting opportunity for all our campers. While other Promise Partnership programs take UNB into the community, Discovery invites the community to experience our campus firsthand.

We strive to realize this objective by providing captivating camps for grades 4-9 within a university environment, led by enthusiastic UNB students. Our emphasis is on hands-on experiential learning within a small group setting. Through our program, we align the interests of young people with diverse university disciplines offered at UNB. For example, using video games like Minecraft as an educational tool to teach coding, problem-solving and creativity to our campers.

We consider it vital that all students in the Saint John area have access to learning opportunities and enriching summer activities, so we are committed to providing bursaries for half of our campers. Bursaries allow students to attend camp without cost.

Each week features a variety of theme-based activities, and lots of time for fun, fresh air and recreational activities geared to each age group. Whatever your interests, explore the fun and educational activities at UNB Saint John this summer.

In Summer 2025, we filled all 320 camp spots putting us at 100% capacity. 53% of camp spots were provided as bursary spots, while we also welcomed 40 + campers from priority schools in our city.

Additional information

Full bursaries are available for our Discovery Camps, up to 4 weeks per camper.

You must contact discovery@unb.ca to inquire about receiving a bursary.

Bursaries are specifically for low-income families who could not or would otherwise struggle to pay camp fees.

Once registration has opened, families should email discovery@unb.ca with up to 4 of their camp choices and dates, and they will be sent a separate registration link by email, for each bursary.

Photos and videos of campers will only be taken if Discovery Camps are given permission during registration by the parent/guardian for the purpose given. These will only be taken for either:

  • the weekly slideshow/video at the end of the week to share with the campers for program activities.
  • to promote UNB Saint John Discovery Camps on social media, websites, news releases, brochures, pamphlets, or other marketing material.

You will be asked to give permission during the registration process.

Participants wishing to withdraw from a Discovery program session and wish to get a full refund, must do so in writing to the UNB Discovery Program discovery@unb.ca at least two weeks (14 days) before the camp begins.

A full refund of tuition minus a $75 processing fee will be issued if withdrawals are made after this date up to noon, the Sunday before the camp starts (this will allow us to allow a camper on the waiting list).

There are no refunds for withdrawals made during camp activities, except for medical or special circumstances (i.e. bereavement).

Common questions

Registration for the camp can be done through our webpage on Active.

We have an online registration form that requires basic information about the camper and the selected weeks of attendance.

Payment options are also provided through the website.

The Discovery summer camp is designed for campers and youth between grades 4 - 9. They will be in a group with their own age group, either Grade 4/5, Grades 6-7 or Grade 8-9.

We suggest choosing the camp for the grade your student is entering in fall of 2026 (i.e, if your camper just finished Grade 5 in June 2026 and is entering Grade 6 in September 2026, choose the Grade 6-7 camp option.) However, this is up to families, overall.

Students who have just completed Grade 9 may still register for the Grade 8-9 Camps, and students who have just finished Grade 3 may still register for the Grade 4-5 Camps.

The camp runs for eight weeks during the summer, from the week after school finishes until mid-August.

2026 Summer Camps will run from June 22 - August 14.

The camp offers a diverse range of educational activities covering various subjects such as Engineering, Maker/STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math), Science, Health Sciences, Humanities, Entrepreneurship, Minecraft and more.

We provide a well-rounded experience to promote learning, creativity and personal growth.

Activities vary from camp to camp but may include lab visits, experiments, hands-on activities, crafts and building and guest speakers.

The program runs from Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Drop-off and pick-up times are between 8 and 9 a.m. for morning drop-off and between 4 and 5 p.m. for afternoon pick-up.

We cannot offer supervision before 8 a.m. or after 5 p.m.

The safety and well-being of campers are our top priorities. We maintain a high staff-to-camper ratio and conduct background checks on all staff members.

Our facilities are regularly inspected for safety compliance and we follow strict protocols for activities involving physical or outdoor elements. We expect that our campers, UNB Instructors and camp facilities are treated with care and respect.

Campers will review all rules on the first day of each week of camp with their camp Instructors.

We require that a parent/guardian is available and reachable by phone during camp hours should an issue arise. If a child needs to leave camp for any reason, the parent/guardian will be required to pick the child up and take them home.

Our staff are not trained to administer any form of medication. We do not have a secure storage facility for medications in the camp facility and we highly discourage campers from carrying medications on their person.

Should your child require medication we request that this be done before arriving at camp, during a lunch break or after camp.

Lifesaving medications such as Epi-Pens and Ventolin Puffers are allowed, however, campers are responsible for carrying them wherever they go.

Yes, your child is expected to bring their own lunch, and may choose to bring their own snacks.

However, the camp fee includes snacks provided twice a day, so it is not necessary. Families can send their foods if they are nut-free and shell-fish free.

If your child will be missing a day of camp or needs to be dropped off late or picked up early, let the Discovery Coordinator know as soon as possible by email, discovery@unb.ca, or by calling 506-608-7323 during work hours.

They can help you make a plan on how to drop off/pick up at different times or will note which days they will be absent.
