Research

Jennifer’s research is applied in nature and centres on interpersonal violence examining how to improve violence risk assessment, risk management, and risk communication. The goal of her research is to identify and implement best practices in society’s responses to violence to minimise its impact on the well-being of victims.

Her primary areas of focus are elder abuse, stalking, and intimate partner violence. A defining feature of her work is its strong connection to practice. Jennifer collaborates extensively with professionals and organisations across health care, criminal justice, social work, mental health, and community services, bringing research directly into the settings where it can make a meaningful difference.

A major focus of Jennifer’s research is harm to older adults. Her work has led to the development of the Harm to Older Persons Evaluation (HOPE), a violence risk assessment tool designed specifically for cases of older adult abuse. She is also investigating older adult homicide and the protective factors that may help prevent or reduce the risk of abuse. In the area of stalking, Jennifer is currently examining topics including cyberstalking, victim impact, and the assessment and management of risk by police and health care professionals.

Jennifer is also committed to training professionals and researchers. She provides training in violence risk assessment, risk management, and safety planning to social workers, nurses, police, mental health professionals, and students. This creates opportunities for students working with her to engage with research that is not only academically rigorous but also connected to real-world practice and the potential to improve how society responds to interpersonal violence.

Students who join Jennifer’s lab can expect to be part of an interdisciplinary, applied research environment where research questions are grounded in real-world challenges and where their work can contribute to improving the safety and well-being of people affected by violence.
