Dr. Wladyslaw Cichocki is Professor of French and Linguistics at the University of New Brunswick. He holds MA and PhD degrees in Linguistics from the University of Toronto. He joined UNB’s Department of French/Département d’études françaises in 1985.

His primary area of interest is language variation and change, with a focus on sociophonetics. He has worked on quantitative methods used to analyze language data, social networks, and variation in small rural communities. He is co-author of the Atlas linguistique du vocabulaire maritime acadien, a dialect atlas of Acadian French. His research has been supported by the CFI, the Department of Canadian Heritage, and SSHRC.

Dr. Cichocki is currently working on two projects: an acoustic phonetic analysis of speech timing in Acadian French and a dialectometric study of phonetic variation in regional varieties of French spoken in New Brunswick.

Dr. Cichocki has served as President of the Canadian Linguistic Association (2015-2017), President of the Atlantic Provinces Linguistic Association (2001-2003), and Chair of the Steering Committee of the International Conference on Methods in Dialectology (1999-2002). He has held visiting appointments at institutions in the United States (Cornell), the United Kingdom (Cambridge, Edinburgh), and Canada (Université de Moncton, Université du Québec à Montréal).
