The UNB Art Centre Presents Equivalents by the SilverFish Photography Collective

For 25 years, the Silverfish Photography Collective, a group of photographers based in Fredericton, New Brunswick, have exhibited thought-provoking concepts through photography and a diverse range of image-making processes.

Their 2026 exhibition, Equivalents, is a direct creative response to a concept developed between 1923 and 1934 by renowned photographer Alfred Stieglitz. Stieglitz is recognized for challenging photography’s traditional documentary role by pushing the medium towards an abstract artistic expression. The intent with his original series, titled Equivalents, that included over 200 photographs of clouds, was for the viewer to engage with the work on a more philosophical level. The hope was that in looking beyond the literal subject matter the audience would consider the emotions and ideas evoked by the image.

In true SilverFish fashion, Equivalents embraces diversity and individual expression. Each participating photographer will offer their own perspective on Stieglitz’s influential idea through their own visual creative processes that include cyanotypes, flipbooks, image projection, weaving, and a varied methods of image making. The result is an exhibition that celebrates how a shared concept can inspire vastly different interpretations.

The SilverFish Photography Collective members who are participating in Equivalents are Kelly Baker, Peter Bjerkelund, Rob Blanchard, Oliver Flecknell, Peter Gross, Lori Quick, Denise Rowe, Karen Ruet, Roger Smith, Christina Thomson, and Mandy Wright.

The UNB Art Centre invites the public to join the Silverfish Photography Collective for the opening reception of Equivalents on Friday, September 25, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Hall, 9 Bailey Drive. All are welcome.

Equivalents will be on view at the UNB Art Centre from September 25 through December 11, 2026
