The Monday Night Film Series presents "THE BLUE TRAIL", on September 28th Monday at 7:00pm at Tilley Hall, Room 102 at UNB.
The Blue Trail is a sharp, mind-bending dystopian road movie from acclaimed Brazilian writer/director Gabriel Mascaro. In a near-future Brazil, an authoritarian government forcibly relocates citizens aged 77 and older to isolated senior housing colonies, prioritizing youth to maximize economic productivity. Refusing to accept this prison of nothingness, 77-year-old factory worker Tereza rejects her forced relocation. With mere days left before her exile, she escapes her settlement to embark on a transformative, self-seeking journey through the rivers and tributaries of the Amazon to fulfill one last wish: to fly in an airplane.
Mascaro brings a wry, witty, and distinctly personal perspective to the story. He seamlessly weaves near-future dystopian technology into recognizable everyday life, creating an enormously moving, texture-rich exploration of a woman's final chapter without letting it become a purely bleak political statement.
This journey is anchored by a stellar performance from Denise Weinberg, who brings profound depth, grit, and humanity to the role of Tereza. Audiences will get an incredibly poignant yet darkly comedic cinematic experience that fiercely celebrates individual freedom, identity, and the enduring human spirit against an unfeeling, hyper-productive society.
"An empowering narrative of one woman who refuses to see age as a ceiling, the film serves as a potent warning for viewers about the marginalization of the elderly." Marshall Shaffer, Slant Magazine
This term, 15 limited release, independent foreign & Canadian films will be shown. Admission is $10/film, but a film society membership reduces admission cost to $7/film. The series is open to all. Memberships are available at Tilley 102 every Monday night.
