POST-WAR JUSTICE
with Dr. Brian Orend
Monday, March 23 · 4 p.m.
106 Carleton Hall
There’s no shortage of wars right now, and no shortage of difficult problems regarding how they might finish. How should wars end? What might it mean to conclude conflict not only stably but with some justice? This talk attempts to develop a suggestive theory of post-war justice, drawing upon Occupation Law, historical best practices regarding successful reconstruction, and Eizenstat’s “gaps analysis” featuring commitments to security, capacity, and legitimacy. Wide-ranging historical examples will be considered, from the two world wars thru Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria, but with special attention paid to the current cases of Israel-Gaza and Russia-Ukraine.
Dr. Brian Orend is a professor of philosophy at the University of Waterloo.
Light refreshments will be available.
