The UNB Art Centre invites members of the public to the opening of the exhibition IN DEEP on May 9, 2025 at 5 p.m. The exhibit is on view until July 25, 2025.
Curated by Amy Ash, this group exhibition observes complex narratives around extractive practices by centering impacted sites–both bodies and lands–over dominant Western Capitalist Narratives. IN DEEP features the work of Frédéric Bigras-Burrogano, Lori Blondeau, Gina Brooks, Emily Critch, Gillian Dykeman, Tsēmā, and New Mineral Collective. According to the curator:
Together these artists care for intricate and intertwined histories while planting seeds for a future where land and body are valued beyond capitalist systems. By way of their processes, actions, and transmissions, the artists decentralize core values of extractive activities, such as power, greed, and ownership, to create space for shared meaning-making, wonder, and learning in the pursuit of healing strategies for change.
In their works, relationships with the land, bodies, the more-than-human world, and one another are honoured and replenished.
IN DEEP was organized as a result of a curatorial residency with Platform Centre for Photographic and Digital Arts in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 2020, and opened after lengthy COVID-19 related delays in June 2022.
Amy Ash is a queer interdisciplinary artist and curator. A member of the International Association of Art Critics, Amy also serves as Associate Director of ArtsLink NB and Editor-in-Chief for Billie: Visual·Culture·Atlantic.
