Every Child Matters: Remembering the Children

On Sept. 30, which is both Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the University of New Brunswick (UNB) will host a commemorative ceremony on both campuses to honour the survivors of residential schools and to commemorate the children who did not return home.

Members of the UNB community are invited to join this in-person event at the Richard J. CURRIE CENTER on the Fredericton campus. They are also encouraged to wear orange shirts to the event and on Friday, Sept. 29.

The Saint John campus is hosting a special livestream event that allows community members to actively join the Elders, Residential School Survivors, and the Fredericton community virtually.

Attendees will write their reflections on an orange heart provided at the event. Afterward, they will place these hearts in a commemorative space where they will display them. Additionally, traditional smudging will be offered as part of the event.

Before the event in Fredericton, community members will gather in front of Sir Howard Douglas Hall to commence the day with a flag-raising ceremony.

  • The flag-raising ceremony begins at 9:15 a.m. at Sir Howard Douglas Hall (Fredericton campus).
  • The commemoration ceremony runs from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the fourth floor, Performance Gym, Richard J. CURRIE CENTER (Fredericton campus).
  • A livestream viewing will take place at Ganong Hall Lecture Theatre (Saint John campus).

This event relates to Indian Residential Schools and deals with topics that may cause readers trauma due to its troubling subject matter. To access support services, please see Every Child Matters

The City of Saint John has scheduled a healing walk to follow the event in Rockwood Park. For more information, please email t.ross@unb.ca.
