Please mark your calendars for the second talk of our Winter 2023 Feminist Lunch Series in the Faculty of Arts to be given on Monday, Feb.6 at 12:30pm in Tilley Hall #28 (basement) on UNB Campus in Fredericton by Dr. Mathilde Savard-Corbeil (French at UNB).

The talk is titled: “Autotheory & Visual Arts in Contemporary French Womens’ Writing”.

In her recent book, Fournier suggests that autotheory be thought of as a postmodern feminist practice. Based on this premise, Dr. Savard-Corbeil situates contemporary narratives of autotheory as a form of engagement in their critique of the legitimation and institutionalization of knowledge. Situated at the crux of essay, literary theory and autobiography, autotheory written by women is intended as an alternative approach to the transmission of experience and knowledge. Two novels featuring artists Nikki Saint Phalle and Louise Bourgeois revisit the representation of women artists and the reception of their works while constructing their authors’ identity, subjectivity and sensitivity. Dr. Savard-Corbeil demonstrates how autotheory uses intimacy, formal hybridity and filiation to reposition both the act of interpretation and literary knowledge, reflecting a commitment affecting the discourse, accessibility, and circulation of women's art.

Dr. Savard-Corbeil is currently an LTA in the Department of French at UNB after having taught at the University of Toronto (St. George Campus). After completing undergraduate studies in art history and comparative literature, Dr Savard-Corbeil received an MA at the Université de Montréal and a PhD at the University of Toronto (2022), working on fictional works of art in the contemporary novel. Her research combines comparative literature and art history and explores the precise descriptions of works of art in current French literature. Dr. Savard-Corbeil analyses the reader's reception of these works, for which there is no concrete reference. Notably, she compares the physical experience, such as going to see works in a museum, with the virtual experience, through reading. Dr. Savard-Corbeil has published articles and other texts in scholarly and literary journals in Europe and North America.

Masks are required in campus classrooms. All are welcome...

Our Feminist Lunch Series series will continue on Mar. 13th with a talk by Dr. Kerri Froc from UNB Law.
