The Winter 2019 Feminist Lunch Series, in the Faculty of Arts, will be given by Catherine Gidney (STU History).

The talk is titled: “Second Wave Feminism and the History of Emotions.”

From the bombing of Red Hot Video outlets to protests against beauty pageants, from lesbian organizing to Indigenous women’s organizations, feminist activities have involved emotions.  Sometimes women acted out of pain and anger. At other times, they were driven by hope and exhilaration. This talk presents on-going work – an edited collection that uses the lens of emotional history to capture the wide range of excitement and passion that flowed through second-wave feminism and to develop insights that might help us tell new stories about the history of Canadian feminism.

Dr. Gidney writes about youth culture and students in revolt over everything from vending machines to curfews to war. She is the author of Tending the Student Body: Health, Youth and the Rise of the Modern University, 1900-1960 and A Long Eclipse: The Liberal Protestant Establishment and the English-Canadian University Campus, 1920-1970.

Stay tuned for the next Winter 2019 Feminist Lunch Series which will feature remarkable speakers from both UNB and STU.
