ENGL6847Fiction of the South Asian Diaspora3 ch
A survey of contemporary novels by writers with South Asian roots whose homes and fictional terrains include India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Canada, the USA, the UK, Trinidad, Tanzania, and elsewhere. We will examine the treatment of such issues as colonialism and postcolonialism, migration and exile, history and historiography, nation and nationalism, race and racism, acculturation and transculturation, politics and violence, gender and the body, and more. We will consider various critical and theoretical frameworks in which these works may be situated, as well as matters of craft,form,and style. Authors will likely include-Adiga,Desai, Hamid,
Mootoo, Naipaul, Roy, Rushdie, Shamsie, and Vassanji.
