USRA are meant to nurture your interest and fully develop your potential for a research career in the natural sciences and engineering. They are also meant to encourage you to undertake graduate studies in these fields. If you would like to gain research work experience that complements your studies in an academic setting, these awards can provide you with financial support through your host university. NSERC encourages qualified Aboriginal students to apply for this award.

Quota: For this year’s Summer 2017 competition, the University of New Brunswick has been allocated a total of 37 awards. Awards to aboriginal students, if they self-identify, are in addition to this quota. NSERC encourages female applications to ensure a 50% participation rate by female students.

Value: The value of the award is $4,500 from NSERC, which must be supplemented by a top-up from the supervisor. The awards are held for 16 consecutive weeks of full-time work over the 2017 Summer term.

Eligibility: Supervisors must hold and active NSERC research grant either at the time of application or when the student holds the award. In addition, faculty members whose research grants terminate April 31, 2017, but have not been given an extension by NSERC to use up the remaining funds are eligible to supervise a USRA student in the Summer 2017.
Students must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents and have completed at least two terms of full-time study when they take up the award. Students must have a minimum cumulative B average (3.0 CGPA). Graduating students may hold an award if they have not yet begun graduate studies. Students holding and NSERC USRA may also not be registered in more than two courses during the term in which they are awarded.

Application Process:  Applications are to be submitted online. You must apply to the Institution you wish to hold the award in order to be accepted.

Applications will be compiled, and sent for Departmental Rankings to be returned to the Graduate School by the January 13th, 2017 SGS Deadline.
